What is Roller Derby?

Contemporary Flat Track Roller Derby is a full contact sport predominately played by all-female teams. Roller Derby has been coined as a D.I.Y sport as leagues are self-organised and not-for-profit. Roller Derby is run by the skaters, for the skaters!

Unlike Roller Derby of the past, contemporary Roller Derby has strong safety ethos and strict rules. Gone are the days of rehearsed violence used to create the Entertainment Value, leading the way for the women of today to enjoy their sport as strong athletes. Don't be fooled by the lipstick and glamour - these girls mean business!!

Flat Track Roller Derby is played on an oval track. Each of the 2 teams consists of 5 players split into 4 Blockers and 1 Jammer. The front blocker is called a Pivot - she controls the pace of the pack. The idea is for the Jammer to get through the pack as many times as she can within 2 minutes. This 2 minutes is called a Jam. Each blocker of the opposing team the Jammer passes legally - she scores a point!
